You need to know about Dave. He’s a YouTuber from Toronto. His channel, Dave’s World Of Fun Stuff, is the main way I learned to do setups. For more than a decade, Dave has been uploading videos of himself setting up and/or repairing guitars and basses of every kind. Each video is a different instrument with its own set of problems that he proceeds to address.
I’m going to go ahead and say that Dave’s method of setting up instruments is exactly right. The only problem is, to learn his method you’d probably have to watch quite a few of his videos. They are not how-to videos. They’re more like just sharing his adventure with this instrument. You may see him measure the neck relief, but he likely won’t tell you what it is.
But I do recommend his channel. Dave won’t steer you wrong.
