While not part of a standard setup, fret sprout, or sharp fret ends, is something many of us have to deal with at some point or another. Sometimes when you receive a bass or a guitar you may notice that the fret ends feel sharp on your hand as you move up and down the neck. This is especially true of inexpensive instruments. But sometimes it occurs because dry air causes the wood of the neck to shrink, leaving the fret ends sticking out. This is one of the reasons why it’s important to have a humidifier in your home if you live in cold climates.
Anyway, what do you do about it? Well, you get yourself a file or two. The kind specifically designed to deal with it. The video below is a pretty good tutorial, I think. Except when he says the thing about masking tape and then doesn’t use any. Be smart. Masking tape is the cheapest thing. Get the kind that is not very sticky. They even sell packs with a variety of widths so you can cover the fretboard even on the highest frets.
